Alana’s Insights
Q. What’s the current demand like for Audiologists and Hearing Aid Dispensers across the UK?
A. The demand is high, and it’s only growing. With over 12.7 million UK residents now aged over 65, we’re seeing a steady increase in demand for Audiology professionals, both in the NHS and private sector.
Q. Which regions are experiencing the most acute shortages?
A. It’s an equal playing field at the minute. The demand for Audiologists is spread relatively evenly across the UK; from what I can see, it isn’t concentrated in any one region. Providers nationwide feel the pressure to hire.
Q. What types of roles are hardest to fill, and why?
A. I wouldn’t necessarily isolate one type. I make sure that every role I take on is treated with full focus and urgency, which helps ensure we fill each one efficiently.
Q. How has the market changed over the past 12-18 months?
A. It’s growing at a steady pace. We’re seeing around 6% growth year-on-year, with 3% growth in the private sector specifically. The NHS is projected to deliver 2 million hearing aids by the end of the year.
Q. Is demand being driven by aging populations, tech advances, or something else?
A. Primarily the ageing population. But we’re also seeing the impact of improved technology, like AI-powered noise reduction, rechargeable batteries, and overall innovation in hearing devices. Public awareness and early diagnosis are also increasing, which contributes to greater demand.
Q. Are clients asking for any additional skills or qualifications now that weren’t requested before?
A. Yes, especially for private roles. HCPC registration is essential. And most clients want to see a degree or master’s-level qualification in Audiology. The bar is high, and that’s a good thing for patient care.
Q. What has surprised you the most about the sector during your career?
A. After 15 years in healthcare recruitment, I’d say not much surprises me anymore, but I’m constantly inspired. Professionals in this sector are some of the most dedicated professionals I work with. Their commitment, attention to detail, and patient focus is genuinely moving.
Q. What about this market do you think doesn’t get enough exposure across public policy and/or public knowledge?
A. Tinnitus. It’s far more common than people realise, and many individuals don’t even know they have it. It’s only recently that tinnitus has started to receive proper attention in research and care pathways. Harvard recently conducted a study that may help GPs diagnose and support patients more accurately. That kind of breakthrough is vital, but it needs more exposure and investment.
