Job Overview
We are recruiting male and female Support Workers to join a weekend complex care package supporting a 31-year-old gentleman in Middlesbrough.
This is a rewarding opportunity to support an individual with a catastrophic brain injury following a road traffic accident, living at home with structured support in place.
The role focuses on promoting independence, dignity, safety, and quality of life through person-centred care. There is also potential for this package to develop into a full-time role following successful weekend support.
About the Individual
The gentleman is described as very friendly, polite, and engaging, and enjoys conversation and interaction with his support team.
Due to his brain injury, he has ongoing neurological and physical needs requiring consistent, reliable support.
He is able to communicate his needs, however:
- His speech can sometimes be unclear, particularly when tired or emotionally heightened
- Clear communication from staff is essential for safety and understanding
- Carers must be confident in interpreting and responding appropriately
Medical Background
- Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) following RTA (2015)
- Right hemiplegia
- Traumatic subdural haematoma
- Multiple spinal, leg, and ankle fractures
- Hearing loss
- Speech and communication difficulties
- Visual disturbance causing dizziness and imbalance
- History of emphysema
Key Responsibilities
Personal Care
- Support with bathing/showering when required
- Assistance with drying, dressing, and hygiene routines
- Skin integrity checks and reporting concerns
Mobility & Safety
- Safe support with transfers and mobility
- Maintaining a safe environment, particularly after bathing
- Supporting use of mobility aids where required
Communication & Daily Living
- Supporting effective communication
- Promoting independence in daily decisions
- Encouraging engagement in routine activities
Domestic Support
- Light household tasks (cleaning, laundry, tidying)
- Maintaining a safe, clean, organised home environment
- Supporting meal preparation and hydration prompts if needed
Routine Overview (Flexible)
Evening Routine
- Support with optional shower/bath routine
- Ensure safety during transfers and wet-floor risks
- Assistance with drying and skin checks
- Bedtime preparation and positioning support
- Ensuring call systems/alerts are in place
Morning Routine
- Minimal support with dressing
- Prompting morning medication
- Supporting hygiene routines where needed
- Light domestic tasks (bed making, cleaning, kitchen hygiene)
- Encouraging independence with daily activities
What We Are Looking For
- Experience in complex care or neurological support (preferred)
- Excellent spoken and written English (essential)
- Confident delivering personal care
- Calm, patient, and respectful approach
- Reliable weekend availability
- Ability to promote independence while ensuring safety
